A moment of celebration such as this cannot take place without a strong and common desire to make it happen. Even though this event has been a matter of discussion for several years, it has finally become a reality today in the city of Bologna. As chairman of the GLB, as promoter of the event with the Confederazione Nazionale dell'Artigianato, but also as a simple violin-maker linked to this craft tradition, today I am proud to display our hidden art to this our beloved city. It is an art which has given the world many admired masterpieces that come from the workshops of this city during more than five centuries of continuous and fecund activity. Two golden centuries for Bolognese violin-making were during the 1700s and 1800s. This exhibition illustrates a period which is more recent, beginning with Raffaele Fiorini (1828-1898) - the transitional link between classical and modern making - and concluding with the period of the lives of our violin-making teachers. We would have liked to include earlier periods in order to shed light on an epoch which is interesting, and yet little known, but for now we limit ourselves to presenting the so called "modern" phase. Although we are well aware of the enormous contributions of the lutherie from neighboring zones, including the entire region of Emilia-Romagna, on this occasion we wanted to specifically focus on the city of Bologna. We hope that a future exhibition encompassing a wider geographic area will be possible one day. Thus with this event, Bologna is happy to also include the art of violin-making amongst those traditions which have made our city famous throughout the ages.
